Oscars and Oprah
Oscars and Oprah
Thursday, April 8, 2010
So, this post has been a long time coming. I am writing it a whole month after the fact, but that’s just because I am a Bad, Bad Blogger as I mentioned in my last post. I totally need to get my blogging mojo back. How pathetic my Archives page looked for March, 2010. Only one post! I hope to do better than that in April!
Now back to the awesomeness that was the 2010 Oscars and the Oprah show! A couple months ago, I was lucky enough to snag tickets to the taping of Oprah’s After-Oscar Party show at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood the morning after the Oscars. I have always wanted to go to an Oprah show taping all these years, but never got around to trying. Since she announced that she is going off the air next year, I thought I should to do my best to get tickets before the Oprah Show ends it’s run.
So, one day, I just happened to check out Oprah’s website and saw that she had a window opening to submit your name for show tickets. Therefore, I did and was lucky enough to get drawn in the lottery she holds for tickets. The tickets I obtained were for her After-Oscar Party show at the Kodak. This was great because I didn’t have to travel all the way to Chicago to attend a taping! Los Angeles is way closer for me.
I went to LA on Oscar Sunday because as anyone that knows me, knows that I am the total celebrity stalker! This is something I am well-practiced at and usually have awesome luck with. Oscar night was no exception.
I stayed at the Beverly Hilton hotel in order to be right near the Oscar night action and because I had to be up at 4:00 AM to get over to the Hollywood Bowl to check in for Oprah.
Earlier in the day, I spoke with the hotel concierge to get the scoop on the best place to stake out for some good celebrity stalking. I knew getting anywhere near the Kodak Theatre on Oscar night was totally out of the question - they even block off all the surrounding streets. So, the concierge suggested I head over to The Four Seasons because that is where a lot of the nominees stay. He told me to hang out there to watch the celebs leaving the hotel to head over to the Oscars.
I thought this was a great idea - one that I wouldn’t have thought of! So, over to the Four Seasons I went. This actually turned out to be a great spot for stalking!
Now, there are certain rules that you have to follow when doing this type of celebrity stalking. You have to keep your cool! The trick is to just blend in and not be noticed. When you get noticed, you get thrown out, so the best way to go about getting noticed is grabbing your big SLR camera and taking pictures with the flash all over. Also, freaking out and hassling for autographs is another way to get yourself ditched out of a celeb haven.
Keeping these things in mind, I only took two pictures at The Four Seasons. First up was this dude - I don’t know his name, but it’s Cooper from Private Practice! My picture totally stinks! I took it through a window really fast. It was the best I could do without getting caught.
After Cooper, things just got better and better. I was in the lobby and who did I just about run into but Colin Firth! He was, literally, 10 inches away from me! So cool! The dude is tall and shockingly skinny. But, oh so cute!
As I was waiting in the very small hotel lobby, a girl was sitting nearby with a big Prada garment bag. She called upstairs to see if “she” was ready for this girl to come up. Turns out “she” was Carey Mulligan, the girl nominated for Best Actress for An Education. The girl waiting in the lobby was Carey’s stylist with her Oscar gown.
The only other picture I was able to sneak was this one of Carey Mulligan. After this, the really gross, little hotel security/rent-a-cop got after me. See what happens when you break the celebrity stalking rules. I almost got the boot because I went against my better judgement and took a picture. Anyway, here’s Carey heading out to the Oscars. I love her little blonde pixie haircut! Super cute!
Here’s a list of the other celebs I met/saw at the Four Seasons:
-Colin Firth - two times before and after he was all dressed in his tux.
-Vera Farmiga (from Up in the Air)
-Jeff Bridges
-Tina Fey
-Jamie Foxx (and his date Stacey Dash - the girl from Clueless)
-Gabourey Sidibe (the girl from Precious)
-Al Roker (from the Today Show)
So, all in all, it was so much fun!
After the Four Seasons, I headed back over to the Beverly Hilton. It was funny because there was an Oscar viewing benefit for a charity called Children Uniting Nations going on at the hotel. When I came in from the parking lot, the red carpet arrivals for this party was right there!
So, what did I do? I just jumped right into the press line with my big SLR camera and no one was the wiser.
This party was OK - certainly more D-list, but it was still fun! On this red carpet, I met/saw people like this:
Kimberly Caldwell (from American Idol).
Gloria Garayua from Grey’s Anatomy.
Speaking of Grey’s Anatomy, it’s the Chief - James Pickens, Jr.! He is super tall!
This is Booboo Stewart - he plays Seth Clearwater in Eclipse. He’s a cutie, but looks too small to be part of the wolf pack!
Here’s Maria Ho - one of the poker playing chicks from The Amazing Race. Sorry, this isn’t a very good picture of her. It was the best I could do.
Remember her? It’s Debbie Gibson. You know, the singer from the 80’s!
Here’s Elliot Yamin (from American Idol). Again, some of my pictures weren’t too good.
From the Hollywood Bowl, they loaded up busses to take folks over to the Kodak Theatre for Oprah.
Elliot was so sweet! My mom really liked Elliot during his American Idol days. She also really likes the music he has done since Idol.
I ran into Elliot again a bit later. It was my mom’s birthday, so I thought I would give her a thrill and ask Elliot if he would say Happy Birthday to her. He was totally cool and glad to do it. So, I called my mom and she got a nice birthday surprise phone call from Elliot Yamin! Now I am glad I threw some votes his way when he was on Idol!
There were many, many more celebs at this party - too many to list!
The next day, I was up very early for Oprah. I had to go to the Hollywood Bowl to check in for the show.
Oscar carnage - what a mess!!
Once I got up to the check in table, I got all signed in and...
For Oprah, the rules stated no cameras allowed. So, I left my camera at the hotel. I had my iPhone though, so I was able to get a few pictures. Sorry that the quality isn’t as good with my iPhone. The thing that totally stinks is I could have easily brought my small point and shoot camera with me. Tons of people had cameras and no one really cared. Oh well, live and learn. Just keep in mind that all the following photos were taken with my iPhone.
There was a long line waiting at the Hollywood Bowl to check in for Oprah!
Once inside the theater, I took my seat and waited a bit more for Oprah. That theater is beautiful inside. It was still all decorated as it was for the Oscars and was just lovely. This iPhone shot makes the stage look much farther away than it really was. Oh how I regret not bringing in my camera!
Once at the Kodak, there was a bit more waiting in line to get into the theater. This was very early in the morning, just a few hours after the Oscars. So, things were still set up all around the Kodak Theatre for the Oscars. But, they were beginning to take things down from the show.
... tagged for the show!
Oprah, here I come!
On TV, when you see the Kodak Theatre (like on the Oscars or American Idol), it looks so big! In reality, it doesn’t seem anywhere near that big once inside. I was seated toward the front, center of the second balcony and could see everything just fine. In fact, I think the first or second balcony seats are better than the orchestra seating because you can see everything from there.
In the audience below in the front were folks like Gayle King, Nate Berkus, Samuel L. Jackson, Holly Robinson-Peete and the families of Oprah’s guests.
Soon it was time for the show to start. I was so excited! And nervous too! See, I love Oprah and I was nervous that she was going to be a big disappointment like Ellen DeGeneres. I once went to a taping of the Ellen Show and it was awful! She was AWFUL! Just seemed rude to the audience and pretended like they didn’t exist. She was completely different than how she portrays herself. So, I was nervous that Oprah would be the same way.
Well, I definitely didn’t have to be! Oprah was awesome! Seriously, pure awesomeness! She was so nice and genuine! It is so easy to see why everyone loves her. Not only that, she was amazing! Of course, she has been doing this for years, but she can conduct interviews like no one’s business! She was really just great!
On the show, she had the Best Actor/Actress and Supporting Actor/Actress. So, there was Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges, Mo’nique and Christoph Waltz.
Here’s a picture of them all on stage. So sad that it looks so far away and a bit blurry. Darned iPhone camera!!
They didn’t waste any time getting The Hurt Locker listed on the lights showing each year’s Best Picture winner! It’s hard to see, but it is there!
Check it out! It’s me and my new boyfriend! He’s a lot taller than I am.
It was so fun seeing Mr. Oscar everywhere!
Soon it was time to catch the Oprah bus back to the Hollywood Bowl. So I said goodbye to the Kodak and headed out.
After a little bit of exploring around Beverly Hills and a stop at In and Out Burger, I headed to LAX to fly back home to my puppies!
Coming home to sweet faces like this...
First out was Sandra Bullock. She was just so sweet and funny! It is a shame that she is going through all the garbage she is dealing with right now. She was so relaxed and silly!
By the way, the following four photos were pilfered from Oprah’s website! They got a bit blurry when I stole them.
After the four winners left the stage, Carson Kressley came out and went over who he thought was the best/worst dressed at the Oscars the night before. To see his list, click here. I think Queen Latifah looked the best!
Unfortunately, Oprah didn’t do any giveaways on this show. But, this show is different from her shows in Chicago. I didn’t mind a bit and it was still super fun just the same!
After the show, I did a little exploring around the Kodak to see all the Oscar decorations still up.
After Sandra Bullock, was Mo’nique. I was most excited to see her! She is HILARIOUS! I have loved her comedy for years so it was exciting seeing her in person.
Next was Jeff Bridges. He looks WAY thinner in person than he does on TV.
After Jeff Bridges was Christoph Waltz - he is such a cute, little guy!
And this...
... just makes everything better!
I can’t wait for next year’s award season! It just does something to the celebrity stalker in me - it gives me what I call “the Fever”!
For next year, I was LUCKY enough to score two tickets to the Golden Globes! Plus a big bag of swag for me and my guest! How sweet is that!?! I am so excited! So, it looks like there will be another round of celebrity stalking for me in January! What fun!
