Pantry Purgatory
Pantry Purgatory

This past week, I spent a large amount of time cleaning out my pantry. This was a household project that was LONG overdue around here. My pantry was bad. Not only was it a mess, but I knew there were many things in there that were WAY past their expiration date. Things that scared me when I thought about them. Things that kept me awake at night!
Here’s a before picture of the disaster that awaited me in my pantry.
Like I said, my pantry was a total mess. I also hated having all that stuff on the floor under the shelves. I knew my floor was needing a good vacuuming behind all that stuff.
My pantry was hideous!
I decided the best way to proceed with this was to empty the entire pantry out and get rid of all the expired food. I am ashamed of all the food I threw away. Talk about a waste of money.
I also had things that had just recently expired (most of which I kept). I called some food banks to see about donating some items that I knew I wasn’t going to use that had just reached it’s sell by date. The food banks won’t take anything that is even a day past the sell by date though. So, I kept some and got rid of others.
I found some really old stuff in there. Here’s an example. A box of Stove Top Soft Taco Bake. The box says it is “New”, however, that was several years ago. They don’t even make this anymore!
Take note of the expiration date.
That’s right! This baby expired on October 20, 2003!!! I realized that this Soft Taco kit has moved with us THREE times!! I was a little sad throwing this away! You can’t get these anymore!!!
However, the oldest item I found was a packet of Sloppy Joe seasoning. That one expired in February, 2002.
My pantry needed help badly!!
So, after a lot of work and organization, I got my pantry in order.
I was also thrilled to get everything off of the floor (except my two dog food bins). Now I can sleep a little better at night!
Nothing is old or expired and everything is in it’s proper place.
