Let’s Go Ride a Trike
Let’s Go Ride a Trike
Sunday, June 7, 2009
So, lately, I have been trying to get some sort of much needed daily exercise. Each day, I usually go for a four mile walk on the lovely creek trail right by our house. Walking is all fine and good, but it does get boring sometimes. Therefore, I thought bike riding would be a fun alternative.
But, there’s just one problem with this whole bike riding idea. I am a MAJOR faller. Being one of the “uncoordinated” doesn’t mix well with bike riding I am sad to say. Also, since I am so short, I have a really hard time with a regular bike. My feet don’t reach the ground at all even when I have the seat at the lowest setting. So, when I go to stop, I have to perform this weird circus act of breaking, stopping and jumping off at the same time. Usually, this results in me crashing and ending up on the ground, which is great fun as you can imagine.
I still had my heart set on the bike riding thing though. The Wayneman has a bike and I thought it would be fun to be able to go riding with him.
You can imagine my excitement when I found this adorable thing at Walmart:
It’s a Schwinn Adult Tricycle! Who knew such things existed!?! I figured this was the answer to all my uncoordinated clumsy prayers!
I can reach the ground and the two wheels on the back make it very stable and difficult to fall over. Plus, it is just so darned cute! I immediately ordered it as soon as I found it online. It arrived a couple weeks ago and Walmart even put it together for free.
Once she gets better at riding, it will be very fun to go riding with her at the creek.
There are a few negatives about my trike though. One is that it only has one speed. So, going up even the slightest hill is a major chore. Much more difficult than a regular bike.
Another is the chain circumference is about half the size around as a regular bike, so you have to pedal twice as much to go one rotation compared to a regular bike.
Also, the thing weighs about 70 pounds, so it is very heavy. I can’t get it in and out of the car by myself.
But, so far, I don’t mind any of this. I like that it is more work to ride because it is a much better workout that way compared to riding a regular bike. So, I am enjoying this trike very much - even though I look like a complete dork riding it! I don’t mind a bit though!
My favorite thing about this trike is the basket in the back. It is huge and holds a ton of stuff. It also folds down if needed.
Or not...
When researching this trike, I read lots of user reviews on Walmart’s website. This one is my favorite. It is by some old dude, age 65 and older. Here’s what he had to say in his review about this trike:
“old hoosier gets lucky, 04/28/2009
this tricycle is great. had it assembled at store #2787 in indianapolis. joel put it together. great job joel. i ride the trike around the neighborhood with my little min. aus. shepard in the basket. (ROXIE) get stopped all the time , people love this trike . got two invites for homemade dinner by some good lookin widows. this trike is a chic magnet. or is it the dog or my good lookin mug. what ever it is my joints are limber and my stomach is full. thats not bad for an old fella!”
Isn’t that review hilarious?? It completely cracked me up! I told my dad about this review and he really laughed. Of course, my dad is really into geezer humor. He gave the trike a try. You know, in case there were any old widows he might want to impress.
It’s been a long time since my dad has ridden any sort of bike. He forgot that you have to steer the handle bars and use the brakes. The goofball almost crashed into the fence. As he says, the uncoordinated thing must be genetic!
The Wayneman also gave the trike a spin. He’s ready to go!!
Something about the Wayneman on a tricycle disturbs me greatly.
Haley also got a new bike. Her new bike looks like Disney Princesses threw up all over it.
She also has the entire Disney Princess protection set (helmet, knee pads, elbow pads, etc.).
He’s off!!
