Right next to our house, there are two weed-ridden empty lots that have yet to be built on. The Wayneman and I have gone back and forth on buying the lot directly next door, but we are really hesitant to add another $100,000 plus to our mortgage.
A couple years ago, the lot next door was sold. The people that bought it, tried to say that the driveway easement for us and our neighbors didn’t exist and threatened to sue us to remove our driveway. As you can imagine, this made for great neighbor relations! The people that own the lot eventually bought a house three doors down from us.
Since then, they have done nothing with the lot next door. That is fine with us. The longer it sits there empty, the better it is for us. However, each spring, the weeds in that lot hit a major growth spurt and get out of hand very fast. As the weather gets warm those weeds dry out very quickly, so we get particularly concerned with the fire danger around the 4th of July. These weeds are also a road hazard because we can’t see the cars coming when we pull out of our driveway or around the bend in the road.
So, every year that we have lived here, I have to go round and round with the County Weed Abatement folks to make the owners of those lots mow down those weeds. The other day, the Wayneman walked out into the field, and I couldn’t see him because the weeds were so high. So, that would make them about six feet high. That is some serious weedage!
As you can imagine, I was very happy this week when I heard the roar of the tractor engine, busily working in the field!
The contrast between the green of our grass and the brown of the weeds is lovely isn’t it? Yeah right...
That tractor was big - but the huge weeds in the field dwarf it. Puts it into perspective so you can see just how high those weeds got.
At first, I thought they were only doing the lot on the corner owned by other people. I thought, “Well, one down, one to go. One less field to hassle with the county over.” I was very happy when they continued on and started mowing next to my driveway!
It amazes me how fast they knocked both those fields down. They were done in about an hour!
It’s a big improvement I think! Here’s the before...
... and here’s the after.
So much better!
