Emily Is Born

Today, my brand-new little niece was born! Little Miss Emily Rebecca made her grand entrance at 7:29 AM via C-Section. She weighed in at 6 pounds 11 ounces and 20 inches long. Welcome to the world baby Emily!
Since Jennifer had a C-Section when Haley was born, Emily was delivered the same way. This C-Section was planned though. I arrived at the hospital at 6:30 this morning just before they took Jennifer in for surgery at 7:00 AM. Soon after that, this little bundle of sweetness was delivered.
Since they only allow one person in the operating room during the surgery, I hung out in Jennifer’s birthing suite awaiting Emily’s arrival. The birthing suite at the Family Birthing Center at the hospital is quite nice.
It has a large couch that I made myself comfortable on while I watched DVDs and waited for Jennifer and the baby to arrive.
The room has a flat screen TV...
... and a nice private bathroom.
Of course, there is also a place for Emily to sleep.
Hopefully Jennifer will be comfortable here during her stay.
Once they brought Jennifer & Emily into the room, the nurse got to work checking Emily’s vitals and blood sugars.
Little Em sure has good coloring! She was nice and red. They put that goop over her eyes.
Since her sugars were a little low when she was born, they wanted to test them again. Poor little thing cried when they pricked her foot for the blood sugar draw. By this time, her sugars had risen nicely.
Next, it was time to get this little baby cleaned up after birth. Here’s Emily’s first bath. She didn’t seem to enjoy it too much!
After her bath it was footprint time! This kind of ticked her off too!
Here’s the final product:
Speaking of feet, this girl has some seriously long toes! I love her insanely long little toe and her tiny triangle-shaped toe nails!
Finally, she was all done being poked and prodded and I was able to hold my little niece! She felt so good to hold. I love them when they are this tiny. I could hold her whole little back and butt in the palm of my hand! Holding her for the first time brought tears to my eyes!
Emily mostly just slept the first few hours of her life away. She really likes to be all swaddled up though. When she started to cry, all you had to do was give her a little squeeze in your arms and she would stop and go to sleep. Guess she misses her small, former living quarters.
Next, it was Grandpa’s turn to hold his new grand baby for the first time.
Poor Haley! She was pretty weirded out by the whole thing. She was completely overwhelmed. As I shut the camera off, she walked over and hid behind my mom because she was starting to cry. She pulled it together pretty quick though. Zak took the baby and Haley got up and snuggled with Jennifer for a little while. This made her feel better.
After that, my mom held her new grand baby for the first time. Haley sat nearby and checked Emily out a bit. She still wasn’t too sure about all this baby business though.
Haley didn’t want to touch the baby, and was adamant that she didn’t want to hold the baby. Haley said, “Babies are very annoying!” It reminded me of what she said nine months ago when we asked her how she would feel if Jennifer had another baby.
It didn’t take my dad long before a weird song came to his heart and he started singing to Emily. Good thing babies don’t remember this stuff. Of course, Emily has this video to remind her.
I know I mentioned how much I love her crazy toes. These little fingers make my heart swoon too!
Her hat didn’t stay on for long. We had to check out all her hair! She was born with a good amount of hair. Pretty much the same color as Haley’s hair when she was born. Just a lot more of it!
At this point, she still hadn’t opened her eyes very much. We saw them for a second and they are dark - dark blue maybe?? It was hard to tell. For the split second that she opened her eyes, I got one picture. It isn’t a very good one though.
Jennifer is very happy with little girl number two.
Once things had settled down, my mom and dad arrived with Haley so she could meet her new baby sister for the first time. We have been doing our best to prepare Haley for this, but I don’t think there is anything that we could say to Haley to completely prepare her for this new arrival. Here’s their first meeting:
Seeing her long fingernails reminded me of that scene in Juno when Juno is heading into the abortion clinic and Su Chen is protesting outside and tells Juno that her baby already has fingernails. Those fingernails change Juno’s mind. Can’t say I blame her. Those fingernails are precious!
I love the cute double chin she is sporting!
These are the pictures that we will whip out to show her boyfriends one day. You know, the photos that will make her cringe with embarrassment...
... and hate us forever!
Jennifer had tried a couple times to get Emily to nurse, but each time she sat up she was nauseated. The nurse came in and gave her some anti-nausea medication and that helped a lot. When Jennifer was feeling better, it was time to do some serious nursing training. It took some work, but Emily finally latched on and nursed on one boob for about a half hour. She learned pretty quick!
After she nursed so well, we gave her a pacifier. She had the sucking mechanics down and she really enjoyed that pacifier!
At this point, Haley still didn’t want anything to do with Emily. She wasn’t interested in even touching her. I told Haley to try helping Emily with her pacifier, and Haley was up for it. She put her finger inside and held it for her baby sister. Houston, we have CONTACT!!
Since Jennifer was tired, we wanted to let her get some rest. So, it was time for us to go home. Haley made the rounds with her goodbye hugs and kisses. She came up to Emily and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Now we are making real progress!
That pretty much sums up Emily’s birth day. We will see you tomorrow little one!
