Walking up to Versailles is pretty cool. The gold gates and trim on the palace just scream the opulence of the day. You know you are about to see something pretty special.

For our time in Versailles, we followed along yet again with our Rick Steves’ audio tours on our iPhones.  It was great!  He took us to all the best sites at Versailles. He also warns you about all the pickpockets in the area. The palace information desk also has a sign to warn you. I guess the pickpockets are a real problem there and everywhere else in Europe for that matter.

You have to look out for these dudes selling their junk. They will scam and steal the heck out of you! They are aggressive when trying to push their crap on you and you have to get pretty rude with them to get them to buzz off and leave you alone.

The ceilings inside the palace are equally as grand.

Upon entering the palace, you see this amazingly grand room that houses a huge pipe organ.  Just beautiful!

The grandest room of all in the palace is the Hall of Mirrors. Back in the day of the Louis’, mirrors were very rare and expensive. To have walls of mirrors was an extreme luxury. Guess Marie Antoinette liked to check herself out.

Speaking of Marie, here’s her bedroom. Now, that’s what I call a canopy bed!

On the chest in her bedroom is a bust of her that is supposed to look exactly like her. She was just a simple girl from Austria after all.

Not to be outdone in the bedroom department was the King’s Chambers with it’s own impressive canopy bed. Apparently the Kings’ bedroom saw a lot of action with a whole lot of ladies. The Louis’ were quite the playboys while married to the queens.

My favorite thing about Versailles is the gardens.

The immaculately manicured gardens are just breathtaking!

The property literally goes on as far as you can see!

Of course, there are fountains everywhere. Unfortunately, none of them were running while we were there.

Not to change the subject, but Paris is known for their breads and pastries.  We found this wonderful Patisserie by our hotel. Oh, mercy me, was this place good!

We would stop by there every morning and grab a couple of chocolate eclairs and croissants for breakfast and a couple of baguettes with ham and cheese for lunch. Two meals for two for all of about 10 Euros! Not too shabby! Their stuff was out of this world good and the ladies that worked there were as sweet as their eclairs!

The gardens of Versailles provided the perfect spot to have a completely Parisian picnic lunch!  That baguette is like nothing I have ever had before!

After our picnic lunch, the weather started turning on us. There were some pretty ominous clouds looming over the palace!

We knew we had to finish up in the gardens and make our way out before the rain started. So we started our long hike uphill back to the palace.

This long stretch of grass was framed on either side by beautiful marble statues.

The perfectly shaped trees were also a sight to behold!

As I looked back on the palace before leaving, I couldn’t help but think what a special place it is!

It’s beauty and grandeur are incredible and we felt very lucky to get to see this amazing place!
