After leaving Florence, we caught an early morning train to head to our next stop - Venice! In my opinion, Venice is the most beautiful city I have ever been lucky enough to visit! The water and the canal streets everywhere are so uniquely and wonderfully Venezia!
Taking the train from Rome-Pisa-Florence-Venice is a breeze. The trains are pretty nice.
It’s great to kick back on the train and relax. The Wayneman was enjoying the train ride to Venice too!
Once we arrived in Venice, we made our way to our “hotel”. It is actually a Bed and Breakfast called Ca’ del Sole-Mori. Our host was Paola and we had a lovely stay at her place! She is just the sweetest!
Staying at her place is nice and homey and the price is great as well!
At Paola’s we threw our clothes into the wash and went out into the bit of rainy weather to do some errands before Venice sightseeing.
Our first stop was their grocery store, the Billa. This is something that completely fascinates me when I go to other countries! Call me weird, but I really enjoy checking out the grocery stores. To me, it is so much fun to see all the different products they have in the foreign stores as compared to our American stores. I also think it is a great way to just see a bit of local life in a city. You won’t find tourists hanging in the grocery store. That is where the locals go and I think it is great fun to experience.
Since when does Nestle make Cheerios??
The prices in the Venice grocery weren’t too much different than in our grocery stores. I do love how some of their products are different though. For example, we have “Kellog’s Frosted Flakes”. In Italy, they are called “Frosties.”
In Italy, Pledge floor cleaner is called “Pronto.”
Why go outside to a restaurant or cafe in Italy for pizza when you can have frozen pizza from the Billa?
Same thing with gelato - why go to a gelateria when you can buy gelato in the store?
That was sarcasm in case you didn’t catch it. I am sure a fresh pizzeria and gelateria are so much better. At least you have choices though!
Speaking of choices, in America we have “Diet Coke.” In Europe, it is called “Coca Cola Light.”
The only thing we saw that was way cheaper than our stores at home was wine. Much less expensive than what we pay for wine in the states - I wonder why??
After our pitstop in the Billa, we made our way out to do some Venice sightseeing! First up, we listened to our Rick Steve’s audio tour of the Grand Canal as seen from the Venice Vaporetto line number one. Having the audio tours from Rick Steve’s was as enjoyable as ever!
At Mondonovo, I bought this Pinocchio mask. I thought it was adorable!
In Venice you walk everywhere (there are no cars). I love wondering around Venice. I love all the bridges that cover the water “streets” to get you from one side to the other.
After Mondonovo, we went over to nearby Ca’ Macana. Their masks are also amazing works of art!
When we finished mask shopping, we went to dinner at this cool restaurant with all these lamps outside at the tables.
I, of course, had to try the pesto gnocchi! It wasn’t as good as Florence, but it was better than what you can find in America!
I bought one from them when I was in Venice 18 months ago. The one I bought on this current trip is very similar to the one I bought previously. I was hoping they would have a mask this time that matched my other one. This one is perfect!
Next we stopped into our two favorite mask makers in Venice. The first place was Mondonovo. This is one of the few places that has authentic Venetian masks - made in Venice. I hate to call them masks though because they are such amazing pieces of art!
After dinner, we wandered around the streets of Venice, admiring her beauty!
However, Venice at night is quite beautiful! I wish I could have lights like these in my house!
As the day came to a close, we looked forward to getting up the next morning and seeing more of wonderful Venezia!
As the sun started to set, we made our way back to the B & B.
